Highways

Cherokee County is ideally situated midway between Charlotte, NC and Greenville-Spartanburg, SC directly on Interstate 85. The County has several industrial buildings and industrial sites located on or near I-85 which is one of the major north-south trade routes in the Eastern U.S.

Other major highways in the County include US 29 which parallels I-85 north-south; SC Highway 11 which connects to I-26, one hour to the west; SC 18 which connects to Shelby, NC and US 74 30 minutes to the north; and SC Highway 5 which is a new four-lane connector between Blacksburg and I-85 to the west and Rock Hill, SC and I-77 to the east. All of these U.S. Highway and state routes have available sites, parks, or buildings that can accommodate industrial clients.

Cherokee County is within a single day’s drive to 65% of the U.S. Population and is within a 45-minute drive of Charlotte, and within 30 minutes of Greenville-Spartanburg via I-85.

Cherokee County has several industrial sites located on the main line of Norfolk-Southern Railway. Norfolk Southern Corporation is one of the nation’s premier transportation companies. Norfolk Southern and its subsidiary companies operate approximately 21,000 route miles in 22 states and the District of Columbia. N-S serves every major container port in the eastern United States including the Port of Charleston – just 3 hours from Cherokee County. In addition, Norfolk Southern provides superior connections to western rail carriers. Norfolk Southern operates the most extensive intermodal network in the East and is North America’s largest rail carrier of metals and automotive products.

Serving more than 29 million passengers a year, the Charlotte Douglas International Airport is the 10th busiest airport in the country. Approximately 623 daily departures with direct non-stop service to 127 destinations, including international service to Germany, England, Canada, Mexico, and South America. In addition, full air-cargo service is ranked 37rd nationwide delivering more than 170,000 tons of freight and mail a year. It is often said that Charlotte is at most one plane change away from virtually any major city in the world. The airport is just 45 minutes from Cherokee County via Interstate 85.

Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport (GSP) is located in Upstate South Carolina, midway between the cities of Greenville and Spartanburg on I-85 (Exit 57) and less than 45 minutes from Cherokee County. GSP has grown into one of the finest airports in the country, steadily meeting the Upstate’s ever-increasing needs.

The airport served more than 1.2 million flyer sin 2009 and offers nearly 100 daily flights. The following airlines serve Greenville-Spartanburg International.

The Port of Charleston

Within 3 hours of Cherokee County are seaports that allow you access for import/export to the world.  The South Carolina State Ports Authority owns and operates marine terminals in Charleston and Georgetown, South Carolina. These port facilities are part of the vital international trade infrastructure of the United States. Inland Port Greer

Inland Port Greer opened in October 2013, extending the Port of Charleston’s reach 212 miles inland to Greer, S.C., and providing shippers with access to more than 95 million consumers within a one-day drive. Inland Port Greer boosts efficiency for international freight movements between the Port of Charleston and companies located across the Southeast, and the project is expected to create additional economic investment in the South Carolina Upstate, where BMW, Michelin and other international manufacturers already operate.

Norfolk Southern serves Inland Port Greer through its main rail line, and the facility is positioned along the Interstate 85 corridor between Charlotte and Atlanta, where Norfolk Southern operates additional rail yards. Rail service maximizes tonnage moved per gallon of fuel for importers and exporters, helping them save costs and lower their carbon footprint. The inland port adds an additional benefit – access to empty containers – for regional shippers, who can send trucks to Greer for the containers they need to move their goods.
